Everyone else built a dictionary. That was the mistake.
Every previous attempt at sign language technology started from the same assumption: that signing is a vocabulary of gestures, and if you map enough of them, you've solved it. That isn't how sign language works, and every Deaf person knows it.
Meaning doesn't live in the hands alone. It lives in the eyebrows that turn a statement into a question. In the shoulders and the tilt of the head. In the space the body claims. In the timing of a movement, the size of it, the intensity behind it. In the micro-expressions that carry tone, doubt, certainty, sarcasm, urgency.
